The Molecular biology and Genomics laboratory is equipped with a specialized facility required to perform various tests and analyses using molecular biology techniques to diagnose and monitor diseases at the molecular level. The laboratory has advanced instrumentation and well-trained personnel that adhere to stringent quality control measures to ensure accurate and reliable results, some key components typically found in a molecular diagnostic laboratory include:

Sample reception and processing: The laboratory has a designated area for ample reception and registration. Required samples may include blood, tissue, swab, saliva, urine, vectors, skin scraps, milk or other biological specimens. Proper sample handling and tracking procedures are followed as per the ISO17025 standards.

Nucleic acid extraction: Molecular diagnostics often involve isolating and purifying DNA or RNA from suspected animal samples. The laboratory has dedicated equipment and reagents for efficient extraction of nucleic acids, such as automated extraction system and manual extraction kits.

PCR amplification:  PCR is frequently used technique in our laboratory. The laboratory has all the necessary equipment to perform this technique, namely, Real time and conventional PCR thermocyclers, Gel documentation system, ultracentrifuges and others.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS):  AHI is equipped with a state-of-the-art NGS facility (NGS Next seq illumine 550) that allows for high-throughput sequencing of DNA or RNA, enabling whole genome sequencing and amplicon including environmental samples. This facility enhances our diagnostic scope to the world class level in detection and characterization of emerging and re-emerging diseases including environmental sample.

Bioinformatics and data analysis: Our genomics laboratory employs bioinformatics tools and software to process and analyze the large amounts of sequencing or PCR data generated. This involves variant calling, alignment, data interpretation, and reporting.
