Rabies Testing Laboratory

Rabies, one of the most devastating endemic disease, is a priority zoonosis in Ethiopia. Annual human death due to rabies is estimated at 2700 in Ethiopia. In animals, rabies can be suspected based on bite history and clinical signs, but laboratory confirmation is the only definitive means of diagnosis.  Rapid and accurate laboratory diagnosis of rabies in animals is essential for timely administration of Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) in human case.

One of the challenges to progress in the control of rabies in Ethiopia was inadequate laboratory diagnostic capacity at national and regional level. However, AHI recently established rabies testing laboratory and case handling facilities.

For the establishment rabies testing laboratory, a twinning project between AHI and ARC –OVR (South Africa), sponsored by world organization for animal health (WOAH), contributed the lion’s share. Under the twinning program, AHI adopted test protocols and provided training to enhance our capabilities. The program facilitated the adoption of standardized test protocols, ensuring consistency and accuracy in laboratory procedures. Additionally, AHI conducted comprehensive training to equip staff with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively implement these protocols. Through this twinning program, AHI successfully enhanced their testing capabilities and improved the quality of their laboratory services. Tests being conducted in the new rabies laboratory include direct fluorescent antibody test (dFAT), direct rapid immunohistochemistry test (dRIT), and reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

As of its establishment, AHI is receiving samples from various regions of the country for confirmatory testing.
